Ron English

Rock Propaganda

I have a master’s degree in Fine Art and art history. I was always a fan of heavy metal bands. At some point in my history a lot of the bands became fans of my art so I got to do their album covers. My technique involves oil on canvas, rather traditional glazing techniques… the subject tends to be less traditional. I build dioramas as studies, do photographs of the dioramas and use the photos as studies for the oil painting.

I have a very visceral and seductive style. Although the subject matter is often philosophical or intellectual, I want the experience of the piece to be more emotional. Most musicians I know are also involved in the visual arts on some level. Visual art certainly enhances the musical experience. I find music is a better vehicle for the expression of raw emotional content. In my own work, I have developed my own symbolic language. The symbolism creates a sub-textual narrative beneath the surface that allows the narrative to be more profound.

The varied life experiences keep the creative juices flowing. I do try to look at everything as if I were an alien and everything I encounter is brand new and not pre-contextualised. I am most interested in human psychology, in scientific rigor versus imagination, emotion, tribal connections and genetic memory.
