Guts, heart & killer riffs by Mikko Kääriäinen
Finland´s morbid princes of the riff, doom metal cult Cardinals Folly will unleash their 4th album 'Deranged Pagan Sons' through Polish Nine Records on CD and via Spanish Topillo on LP around September 2017. Dabbling in the world of occultism, weird tales, obscure horror, pagan rites and Luciferian depravity, the band has recorded an album consisting 8 powerful, even wild anthems of heavy doom and metal mastery, that never let their savage NWOBHM-influenced classic doom grip go, despite going on a varied 48-minute fiery ´n´ groovy metal adventure.
Previous album "Holocaust of Ecstasy & Freedom" (Shadow Kingdom Records, 2016) paved the way to this so far most perfect fulfillment of their blasphemous art, where every song rolls by like a megafauna of a bygone age in a shadowy domain, where the only law is to doom in, drop out, rock hard & stay true.
Our new album 'Deranged Pagan Sons' attacks with eight tracks and 48 minutes of pure heavy metal doom, with killing handcrafted grooves & surging energy! Our finest work so far, and catches you like the cold!
Our music is old-fashioned metal, but still fresh. Roughly epic in a way. But it must not be too polished, even if it has to sound good. We are using traditional elements to create something new. We pay attention to song structures, riffing styles and variations a lot. Doom metal is getting boring, lots of sheep in the genre just plodding along without any own passions. We want to be the most powerful and entertaining band this subgenre has to offer, and we intend to work accordingly to that. The bar has been set high, and on every recording, we must surpass the previous one. It´s our principle. To make kickass metal and bring doom back to its glory days. True doom, no stoner, sludge, psych, drone, or whatever else. Metal with guts, heart & killer riffs!
We use all the influences in metal that we like. Everything from black metal grimness to classic NWOBHM galloping. Cardinals Folly, just to be clear, should be labelled as doom metal, but to us, that means combining all the good old fireworks of heavy metal from the 70s and 80s. No tempo limitations, no specific famous amplifier/pedal sound to make it more brandable - and no trends. Only pure impact.
Sometimes I just feel inspired, and want to grab the bass and jam a bit. Usually, it happens when I haven´t listened to much music, actually. When I listen the most, I write the least. When I don´t listen to much music, my brain feels more potent to produce material. During those moments the riffs just come - just like that. And you need to transcribe them as music without leaving any detail out. It´s all about the groove and rhythms. Anyone can write a basic doom metal riff, but to make it actually shake your ass while listening requires some craft. Lyrics sometimes come before the music, sometimes after. It´s a mental process, you become comfortable enough with the ideas to finally know what to write. Or sometimes it can simply be a book or movie that inspires the whole song. Or some weird life event. On this new album, there´s several lyrics about my real-life ventures. The album title came when I and a close friend of mine were drinking and talking about the similarities in some weird episodes in our lives. He made a poem in Finnish about us being "Deranged Pagans", and I translated it into the final form.
Mankind is totally doomed! And that´s why Folly will prevail. These are dark times, and it serves our wicked art... most of the stuff I read strengthens my conviction, that we are fucking doomed. I'm like my mentor Nietzsche - I know that the ones who are right, are the doubtful and absolutely hard ones. "Goodness", feigned morality and laziness has spoiled people. It's a solemn period we´re living thru now, therefore we need dark music... the soundtrack to this slow apocalypse.
