UNDERGROUND INC.: The Unsung Story of Alternative Rock

It was the early 90's - seemingly out of nowhere, a little grunge band called Nirvana began outselling massive commercial artists like Michael Jackson. This immediately caught the attention of the giant record companies. These small underground bands branded as 'alternative' or 'post-punk', went from being inconsequential to being potential behemoths in record sales - and the hunt began.

Hungrily sweeping for the next Nirvana, a buying frenzy ensued as small indie labels were bought out by the commercial labels on a never before seen scale. A&R execs would see random alt-rock bands perform in a bar and appear after their set offering unheard of financial offers and immediate global exposure. It seemed these band members were set for life - so what happened?

Verity is revealed in UNDERGROUND INC.: The Unsung Story of Alternative Rock, an upcoming documentary destined to be the ultimate look at the alternative punk and metal scene in the 90's, and a must see for serious music lovers. Told by the artists who pioneered a sonic subculture, this feature-length documentary tells the real story of the 90's - exposing viewers to an amazing catalog of the era's rarities and buried treasures, while re-living the struggles, triumphs and tragedies, as well as the debauchery. UNDERGROUND INC. will dig beneath the manufactured truth to explore what really happened, exploring a time unlike any other in the music industry!

UNDERGROUND INC. features interviews with members of seminal 90's rock, punk and metal groups such as White Zombie, Queens Of The Stone Age, Primus, Bad Religion, Stone Sour, Clutch, Red Fang, Failure, Ministry, Quicksand, Helmet, Steve Albini, Sepultura and dozens more. Viewers are getting an in-depth, raw look at the scene from musicians who were at the forefront.

UNDERGROUND INC.'s original music is composed by Peter Mengede (Helmet), Grammy nominated record producer Alex Newport (The Mars Volta, Bloc Party, Death Cab For Cutie) and Mark Bradridge.

In order to get this documentary out of the creation stages and into the homes of music lovers, the creators of UNDERGROUND INC. have launched a Kickstarter campaign. The Kickstarter campaign will run for 32 days, and the project goal is $40,000.

You can support the documentary here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1412308217/underground-inc-the-unsung-story-of-alternative-ro

UNDERGROUND INC. Kickstarter rewards include:

- Copies of the film, exclusive featurettes and footage

- An RIAA Gold award for the classic Helmet album Meantime

- Exclusive rock prints by international art photographer Ken Schles... and much more!

Via their Kickstarter campaign, the UNDERGROUND INC. team states, "This team of professional filmmakers is highly passionate about their music. We are obsessively committed to delivering a mind blowing film, but some practical challenges still remain.

Let's make this happen for the artists. For the fans, for the uninitiated, for the generations to come that will be able to be inspired by this until now untold history of some of the greatest music ever amplified on the planet Earth."

UNDERGROUND INC. is directed by award-winning Writer/Director Shaun Katz (Sleeping In Blood City). The Heavy Metal Tidal Wave that was Motorhead’s Umlaut

It’s been nearly a year since the untimely passing of Lemmy Kilmister, and up to now; some of us still feel the sadness and the void left by the legendary frontman. The Motörhead singer and bassist left a permanent mark in the music industry – more specifically the wide world of heavy metal and rock ‘n’ roll. From his raspy singing voice and his impactful lyrics, to that signature lifestyle and iconic look, everything about him represented the genre through and through. However, above all, Lemmy and the rest of Motörhead wrote a grammatical rock ‘n’ roll style that – in more ways – shaped heavy metal.

Aside from injecting a more aggressive, heavier tone to rock, Motörhead is one of those diverging figures that started this umlaut revolution in metal. In hindsight, they weren’t the first band to incorporate those – what millennials call today as – emoji-like letters, but they certainly personified the tradition. In the underground and mainstream scenes, some of the first artists that come to mind are ‘60s German proggers Amon Düül and Blue Öyster Cult in the early ‘70s, respectively. A couple of years later, after Lemmy left his former band, Hawkwind, Motorhead – without the proper dots – was born. True to his personality, he added an umlaut over the second “o” to, in his own words, make it look mean.

There’s no denying how Motörhead have influenced many bands currently plying their trade in rock music. Truth be told, this effect reaches beyond the borders of rock, and music in general, into the more middle-of-the-road world of video gaming. The band has a themed collaboration/expansion mode with action-role-playing-game Victor Vran called Motörhead: Through the Ages. Additionally, they even have an online game on Slingo modestly named Motörhead Video Slot. In other areas outside music, like what was highlighted earlier, the band spearheaded the “coolness” of adding an unnecessarily vital umlaut.

Lemmy never hid the fact that he pinched the idea from Blue Öyster Cult, but for some strange reason, this small ripple turned into a huge tidal wave. Different heavy metal bands of that era followed Motörhead’s, and began integrating certain twists to their names. There are the likes of Mötley Crüe, Queensrÿche, and The Accüsed, just to name a few in the genre. Outside heavy metal, Hüsker Dü and even R&B singer Jason Derulo are some of the first ones that come to mind (Derulo used an umlaut for his debut album to help fans pronounce his name correctly).

Motörhead’s umlaut was never a gimmick nor was it a grammatical necessity; it’s a simple testament of how they – as bona fide figures in the rock ‘n’ roll scene – are supreme influencers of their generation. It gave heavy metal its edge and individuality, as well as established Lemmy Kilmister as a true music icon and genius.

Septicflesh to record with the FiImharmonic Orchestra of Prague again

SEPTICFLESH are progressing at fast pace in the making of their next full-length, which is tentatively due in the first half of 2017 The Greek demons are currently announcing to record once again with the Filmharmonic Orchestra of Prague on the 18th and 19th of December. Guitarist and award winning classical composer Christos Antoniou has already successfully collaborated with the Czech orchestra for the acclaimed previous SEPTICFLESH masterpieces 'Communion' (2008), 'The Great Mass' (2008), and 'Titan' (2014).

SEPTICFLESH have previously revealed that the work on their next album is already in full swing. The band stated: "We are proud to announce that SEPTICFLESH are in the middle of the writing process for the follow up to our latest  album 'Titan'. We will work with Swedish producer Jens Bogren at Fascination Street studios. Our new drummer Krimh will be appearing for the first time on a full recording. We can promise you a dark opus that will add new dimensions to the sound of SEPTICFLESH."

With the eagerly and long awaited re-release of 'Revolution DNA' (1999), Season of Mist is now completing the reissuing of SEPTICFLESH's back catalogue. The acclaimed fifth full-length of the Greek demons was essentially a logical continuation and sharpening of the formula of its well-received predecessor 'A Fallen Temple' (1998). Their unique amalgamation of elements taken from death and gothic metal (meaning bands such as MOONSPELL and TIAMAT) with added experimental and progressive touches was taken to a new level.

While dropping the female vocals of previous releases, their captivating duels between Seth's harsh growls and Sotiris' emotional clean voice intensified. SEPTICFLESH's talent for dark atmospheres and avant-garde experimentation without losing ground contact reached a new height. It had been an adventurous musical journey that led from their savage debut EP 'Temple of the Lost Race' (1991) to the daring course taken by 'Ophidian Wheel' (1997), and through the widening of the horizon with 'A Fallen Temple' to the depths of 'Revolution DNA'. Coming from the safe harbour of traditional death metal, SEPTICFLESH soon entered more challenging waters by adding classical elements as represented by their first two full-lengths 'Mystic Places of Dawn' (1994) and 'Esoptron' (1995). Their third album 'Ophidian Wheel' witnessed the Greeks experimenting with the possibilities offered by original Gothic Metal as defined by PARADISE LOST's album 'Gothic' (1991) and the use of beautiful female vocals contrasting with harsh growls.

SEPTICFLESH were conceived by Christos and Spiros "Seth" Antoniou in Athens in the year 1990. The brothers were soon joined by guitarist Sotiris Vayenas. The debut EP 'Temple of the Lost Race' (1991) laid the foundation of a steadily rising career, which was only interrupted by a hiatus as the band members decided to go separate ways after the release of 'Sumerian Daemons' (2003). Continuous demand of their large and loyal following finally lead to a reunion in 2007, after which SEPTICFLESH firmly established themselves as a leading force of symphonic Dark Metal with critically acclaimed masterpieces 'Communion' (2008), 'The Great Mass' (2011), and 'Titan' (2014).

'Revolution DNA' comes with new artwork by Adrien Bousson approved by the band, exclusive liner-notes by Olivier "Zoltar" Badin, and bonus tracks, which were not available on the original release. The back catalogue of SEPTICFLESH will soon be completely available from Season of Mist.
