The Pardoner By Ashley Scott
Formed in 2013, Abhorrent Decimation made quick work of releasing a debut EP that received great acclaim from fans and press worldwide. They made their mark on the live circuit in 2014 after a string of UK tours and a notable appearance at Bloodstock Festival (UK). It was after that performance the band became a regular talking point within the UK scene. With a strong, established fan base poised; the band was ready to release their debut full length. ‘Miasmic Mutation’ was received with an incredible amount of praise and attention from journalists, their peers and music fans alike. ‘Miasmic Mutation’ was heralded as “one of 2015’s must have death metal records” by Metal Hammer. Further touring and ventures across into mainland Europe enhanced the band’s presence and authority within their circles. In the early months of 2016, the band signed a record deal with Prosthetic Records and began work on the follow up to their 2015, debut full length. A year later, the band has just released their new album ‘The Pardoner’, the first to come out via Prosthetic Records, has already received considerable praise from fans and media alike.
Our main songwriter, bassist, and producer, David Archer has been playing in, and recording bands since his early teens, when it comes to metal he’s into more of the modern side of things. Our lead guitarist, Ross McLennan is into his thrash and shred, usual suspects. He studied music and is also a guitar teacher. Rhythm guitarist, William Cooke is into his symphonic and blackened death and also enjoys some stoner doom, he also studied music. Our Drummer Alex Micklewright is into his tech and death. He’s a full-time drum teacher, session player and has a busy function schedule. Me, Ashley Scott, I’ve been in bands since I was 15, started out as a bass guitar player and then picked up the mic. I’m into a variety of metal, my favourite is straight-up death metal.
We don’t really write as a group or anything. Most of the songs and arrangements on the album were written and arranged by our bass player David Archer, he normally starts with one riff, a centrepiece and then builds from there. Once he has something down, he would put it over to all of us to listen to, approve or give feedback on and then he would go from there to build each song a little more.
Our inspirations are the obvious ones like literature and art. The album itself is a concept record that tells the tale of Geoffrey Chaucer’s character ‘The Pardoner’ from ‘The Canterbury Tales’. I also read ‘Lolita’ and ‘Into The Wild’ around that time. Both stories definitely guided my style and outlook at the time. For me, art evokes linguistic flow. It’s hard to explain, it’s as if creating something helps me to make sense of other ideas. I was producing a lot of paintings when I was bringing the lyrics together for the album. I was in a real big Anselm Kiefer, Cy Twombly & Kazuo Shiraga phase at the time. I’ve always enjoyed painting but I’ve never worked on both things at the same time of year. It’s normally seasonal if we are not writing, I’m trying to express myself with my art.
We’ve got a few records out but reference our latest release ‘The Pardoner’ for the closest interpretation of our vision for the sound of the band. Things have progressed significantly since our first EP from 2013. I’d say our sound is definitely more of a “Modern” one. Noticeably brandishing the influence of our American peers. There are elements of “core” in there. Some shred, some black metal moments and a little progressive, soundscape seasoning here and there.
