The Resilient By Aaron Matts
Our latest release ‘The Resilient’ is a record we’re all extremely proud of, the writing process for this album was completely different from that of our previous record ‘Phantom’ but yet similar to that of our first album ‘Breathe In Life’ in the sense that we took over a year off to write it which put us in a fresh atmosphere clear of too much influence and distraction. We went back to our roots and grabbed the BTM sound right from when we were at our most passionate height, and we feel it really comes through!
We often refer to a record as being something culinary (being Frenchies), there are many good ingredients out there, many ways of preparation that are each in their own right great elements, but you could take the best ingredients that are on offer and they won’t always mix to become a tasty dish as it were; we found out on this record the importance of using only the ingredients that matter at their place and time and to not overdo it with the seasoning (laughs) simplicity is often the way forward. And communication, communication is key!
We try to steer clear of elaborate sub-genre tags, but most describe our relationship with music as ‘symphonic deathcore’ and I suppose we’d be rather ignorant to deny this being the closest description for what we do (laughs) as long as people are into it, they can call it whatever they like, it’s written for them after all.
I’ve always been inspired by subjects that I live and feel, or current affairs that have affected my life or the lives of those with whom I’m in direct contact; this record has a especially dark theme, this has no doubt been inspired by recent terrorist attacks in France and the dark undertone of which 2016 was constructed. Regardless of the dark theme, there is most certainly a positive message to be taken from it, that’s always been our goal as a band.
We’ve never been ones to impose our political beliefs throughout our music though, there’s no doubt many hints of political subjects on this record simply because of the current French, and worldwide climate.
Lastly, a good record cover to me is simplicity, a timeless image that ages well with the band. This is exactly what we went for with the artwork for ‘The Resilient’ – the blood splatter represents the troubles and hardships that we have endured to keep this dream alive and those we’ve had to cut loose.
