Scalps By Matt Downes
Blending the chainsaw fury of Swedish death metal with UK Hardcore’s sledgehammer groove, Casket Feeder is a punishing trifecta of brutality, rage, and power. Founded in late 2016, Casket Feeder quickly built a reputation for a blistering live show and hard-nosed DIY ethic. In support of their self-released and recorded debut EP ‘Venomous Tongues’, the band burnt their mark across the UK playing and touring with bands such as Venom Prison, Conjurer, Heart of A Coward, Ingested, and Leeched.
With their upcoming EP ‘Scalps’, Casket Feeder are primed to unleash a new offering of heightened extremity. Recorded by James Burke (The Infernal Sea) and mixed & mastered by Samuel Turbitt (Ritual Studios) Scalps is an incendiary state of the world address taking aim at political corruption, social divide, and the deep-seated injustices of today. Set for release on June 1st through Hibernacula records, Scalps will see Casket Feeder further carve their name into the UK underground and beyond.
Rabid, crushing sonic violence as a conduit for our rage against the ills of the modern world. First and foremost, the music has to excite us and give us that same rush of adrenaline that we feel when listening to our favourite artists – just “ok” is not good enough. We seek to challenge ourselves when approaching a new song, be that in a technical sense or incorporating different influences and moods into our sound while maintaining a cohesion throughout our music – we seek to constantly push ourselves and our sound with each new song and release.
Ultimately we want the artwork to convey our lyrical content and message of the music while being a bold statement in its own right. The artwork for our upcoming EP, ‘Scalps’ depicts a businessman being bound and scalped; while being a literal representation of the title, the image visually encapsulates the records’ themes and lyrical targets of political injustices, class war, corruption, labour practices of multinational corporations, and social divide. The violence of the image is a response to the suffering inflicted upon the most vulnerable in society by the ruling elite.
The songwriting for us is definitely a collective process. We don’t have one main songwriter who writes everything. It can vary from one of us bringing a complete song to work on, coming up with a lyrical concept or simply just getting all together and writing a song from scratch. Typically, we’d demo ideas and then take it to the practice room and make any adjustments along the way. Everyone has an equal say in writing, and there isn’t any particular process that we stick to. If someone has an idea they want to contribute and we like it, we will use it.
Belief is a state of mind in which a person accepts that something is true, even if it is fallacious or without proof. These beliefs are fundamental ideologies that allow us to interpret and interact with the world around us.
They are often strongly influenced by other people’s opinions and prejudices and usually formed from an early age, more than likely unconsciously and without deliberation and have a fundamental influence on the individual’s attitude and behaviour. Ideologies are easily twisted to suit the agenda of the believer or a collective; for instance, the hypocrisy and violence of religious fanaticism or the subservient consumption of distorted truths peddled by various media outlets. These are examples of belief binding people in a herd mentality, rather than spiritually enriching and empowering the individual. Collectively, none of us subscribes to any religion or associated belief system – instead, we believe in the power of the individual through determination and resilience against life’s struggles, self-improvement, and the karmic responsibility of trying to be a positive force in this life. Our music is extreme and aggressive but is our voice to rally against the greater evils of the world.
