THE LAST MIRROR – EDU
Art: Rodrigo Pereira Salvatierra

Ataraxy emerged in 2008 from the clogged-up sewers of Zaragoza, Spain to deliver uncompromising and dark death metal. Having worked with different labels such as Memento Mori, Dark Descent Records or Me Saco Un Ojo, the band is now supporting the release of their third full-length album, The Last Mirror (2022, Dark Descent Records / Me Saco Un Ojo).

Santiago writes songs. We rehearse them as soon as inspiration appears, and then Javier adds the lyrics and vocals.

We did have our escapist period dealing with fantasy and horror (mostly Lovecraftian), but it always had that philosophical and existentialist edge you can obtain from cosmic horror. Nowadays, lyrics are way more earthly (isn’t that horrifying enough?) and are fueled by a more personal and poetic approach. No religious or esoteric current is present in our music.

It all started as it did for most people from my generation. A cooler, older individual (my school best friend’s brother) would lend us CDs of that amazing unknown music, and everything slowly came together. Kill your idols! But some personal favourite life-changing albums would be To Mega Therion, Altars of Madness, Reek of Putrefaction, Seven Churches, Hell Awaits, Brave Murder Day and everything Iron Maiden.

Any fetishes? We all four do, but I can’t think of any of them that we share, and that’s related to what we do as a band. If I had to choose one, I’d say local hero Francisco de Goya, whom we all admire. Growing up, I aspire to be like Ramón “El Tigre del Maestrazgo” Cabrera, Antoine Charles Louis de Lasalle or Arnold Schwarzenegger. Your choice.

Music transcends mere entertainment, conveys so many different feelings and states of mind, and has helped me and been my companion during the darker and the brighter times of my life.

We all listen to many different kinds of music. Some random non-metal artists I’ve been listening to lately: The Chameleons (on heavy rotation), Augustus Pablo, Townes Van Zandt, The Cure, Killing Joke, Fields of the Nephilim, Sol Invictus, Más Birras, Jiří Schelinger, Christian Death, Mark Lanegan, Jim Čert, La Búsqueda, Héroes del Silencio, The Cramps, Xmal Deutschland, Hüsker Dü.
