Forever Negative with Stefan Lang
Art: Frederico Bossinga
Black Negative Domination is a German-based death metal (studio) band formed by Stefan Lang (songwriting, guitars, bass, lyrics) in 2018; released 2 EPs and a single so far. Chris Whitby (vocals) joined in 2019. Philipp Horst has been helping with the drum programming since the ‘All Hail Death And Doom’ EP.
Black Negative Domination is my emotional playground. It’s death metal but with a bunch of different influences from all kinds of genres. Sometimes it’s melodic or old school, but it’s always from the heart.
The recording and writing process is pretty dull and always the same – I am writing all the songs and lyrics, recording the demos, sending them across the globe to New Jersey to Chris, he’s doing the vocals, sending his tracks back to Germany and then I usually ask him to do it again. At the same time, Phil is editing my drum samples to make them sound a bit more ‘organic’.
We all have been at this point in life where you think, “Okay, from now on, it can’t get worse anymore”. And it did. Way worse. Over and over again. So basically, it’s about the stuff I went through the last few years – desperation, loss of all perspective and sense in life. And instead of making my friend’s ears bleed, I wrote songs about it. I guess I did make my friend’s ears bleed anyway.
Nowadays, everyone is a philosopher and tries to enrich the world with the wisdom they’ve read on the internet. It’s so annoying that suddenly everyone is an expert in politics, medicine and history and tries to convert you while they cannot control their own life. I want to write and play whatever music I like and scream out my anger without any deep message. Aside from that, enjoying life, even just the small moments, is essential. There are so many people out there that are trying to ruin your day. Do your best not to let this happen. And don’t be an asshole.
It started with my dad. He was a bass player for a local country band but also had an electric guitar; back then, I discovered Guns n Roses – Use Your Illusion 1 when I was around ten years old, and it blew my mind. After that, I saw a poster of Black Sabbath’s Dehumanizer in some dude’s room. And then we listened to this album. It’s still one of my favourites, even though I love Ozzy. From then on, I always wanted to write riffs like Tony Iommi. Well, at least I am writing some riffs. I got my first guitar when I was eleven and never had any lessons; I played songs I enjoyed. I discovered bands like Type O, Pantera, Bolt Thrower, Death and Entombed, which are still my favorites. The 90s were so full of great bands. There are probably 100 more bands I could mention. But Black Sabbath, Type O Negative and Pantera – these bands are responsible for the name Black Negative Domination.
I can’t (and don’t want to) speak for the world, but for me, it’s a very intense way to express feelings without hurting someone… But yeah, there’s so much music out there that unites people. So many songs out there are about love and the pain that comes with it when this love is gone. I guess most people have been through this situation, even though we think we are all alone every time it happens, and our suffering is unique. But it’s not. Just listen to Paranoid.
