ASHES WITH DANA BOWMAN
Our new album Ashes 2021 was a pretty long process. As a band, we went through a lot of grief, we grew apart from friends, and we had some close friends and family pass away. At first, we were simply writing songs for an album, but then life happened. We all took our life situations and captured those hardships into our music as best as we could. We ended up with more dynamic and “real” music than we were used to writing before. Ultimately the album reflects heavily on loss and change, and the title Ashes is kind of a metaphor for that.
We knew it was time to make the record long before it was ready. We all write at home, then bring in core ideas for the band to warp into something we all agree is cool. We had a collection of many songs, and it was a matter of choosing the right ones to convey what we were trying to say with the record. The band members are big fans of the album format, and we wanted to have enough material to record a full-length album. After that, it all fell into place.
I think we all just try to make the best of life, and no one really gets super deep until we can express it in our art (or if alcohol is involved). There’s so much going on in today’s world that it’s almost impossible to focus on anything that isn’t right in front of you.
Metal has always been a part of my life; there’s actually a video of me rocking out to Judas Priest in a jolly jumper. I must have been 1 or 2 years old at the time. There’s definitely an emotion you get from metal that you can’t find anywhere else in the world.
I think the fact that metal is so powerful and emotional makes it important. I couldn’t imagine my life without it. No matter what you are going through, metal is always there to remind you that you are stronger than whatever life throws at you.
