Kill with Thomas “The Bloodbeast” “Blutgott” Gurrath of Debauchery
In post-apocalyptic times, the Blood God starts the death metal war machine again. 10 years of constant warfare have made Debauchery even more brutal and sinister. Battlefields all over the world, from Russia to China and al across Europe, left the “Man in Blood” victorious. Most of the well-known festivals – Wacken, Summer Breeze, With Full Force – were destroyed. On the campaigns Debauchery followed bands like Napalm Death, Destruction, Six Feet Under and many more. The Blood God and his Murder Squad strode beside icons like Slayer, Venom, Immortal and Saxon – always recognizable because of their gore-drenched shows, half-naked Blood Babes and mutilated body parts. The controversy of the band has brought Debauchery often in contact with the big mainstream media, be it a story in BILD about the lesbian porn for “Death Metal Warmachine” or articles about the loss of the teacher job of the frontman. But in spite of all the brutality of the fantasy image, in real life the moral standards are of another kind: Thomas Gurrath is a vegetarian, his statement is the video for „Animal Holocaust”, created in cooperation with PETA.
The themes of the new album „Kings Of Carnage” are a mix of blood and violence based on the DEBAUCHERY world of Carnage – with attached table-top wargame and collector’s miniatures like Bob, the Butcher of Bitches. The album tells stories about monsters, making cookies out of people in industrial murder camps-for the first time with German lyrics “Let There Be Blood”. It tells something about murder-engines coming through the gates of hell to make our world their battleground, screaming their warcry: “Yes we kill!” It also tells stories about the Last Crusade – an alliance of Christians and dragons – and tales about demon slayers and the Brotherhood of the Blood.
The cover artwork for this new masterpiece has created no other than the fantasy-icon Adrian Smith, behind the brutal sound stands Dennis Ward (Unisonic, Krokus).
HMA: Welcome Thomas “The Bloodbeast” “Blutgott” Gurrath to Heavy Music Artwork.
Debauchery: Hi, thanks for interview request.
HMA: “Kings of Carnage” marks the 8th blood soaked full-length to the Debauchery collection. What makes this one stand out from the others?
Debauchery: It´s better than all the other records so far. Otherwise still the same, Heavy Metal with Monstervoice. Lyrics about Dragons, Demons and War in Hell.
HMA: What was the lineup on recording the album?
Debauchery: One of the DEBAUCHERY live drummers did the drumming. Tom Naumann played all the cover bonus tracks on guitar and Dennis the bass as always. Never change a running system. Guitars and voices were my part.
HMA: Fit women in blood is kind of your trade mark, right?
Debauchery: Yes, Blood is my trademark, and I like pretty women too, like most men.
HMA: What else is added to the experience?
Debauchery: Groove, a lot of groove, and more blood, and some R-rated Fantasy lyrics.
HMA: Tell us about your flirtation with catchy popular terms for example “Germany’s next Death Metal”.
Debauchery: I like this play on words, like Let there be BLOOD, or Back in BLOOD or Germany’s next DEATH METAL. But that´s all. It has no deeper meaning or something like that. I do not want to criticize TV stuff like the Top Model thing. I do not even know the program.
HMA: Would you participate to the Euro Song contest… you know just for the shock values and to see some more blood on TV.
Debauchery: Of course, if someone would be interested in DEBAUCHERY I would do it.
HMA: I believe you attempted to support the animal rights group PETA. Can you tell us what motivated to do it and why were you turned down from the group?
Debauchery: I support the animal right movement and I’m a vegetarian, but I was never part of PETA. We cooperated for the ANIMAL HOLOCAUST video clip. They gave me all the material I needed for the video.
HMA: Is “Hell Culture” still part of your creative outlet?
Debauchery: I think you refer to my old art page. I don’t have it any more, but I’m still working on many things. You can see artworks from me in the Carnage books and in the inlay of the new album.
HMA: Considering your skills and knowledge, how are you involved in conceiving the album art for Debauchery?
Debauchery: I’m doing nearly everything – like layout, pictures, additional designs for the inlay and T-shirts – but never the coverartwork. For the coverartwork I asked again mighty Adrian Smith. He is one of my favourite artists of all time. I will never reach his awesomeness with my paintings. So for the CD cover and many shirtdesigns I will always ask him.
HMA: Lastly… in 2010 you were fired from your philosophy teaching position. Can you tell us what really happen?
Debauchery: It’s too complicated and to boring to tell. But the decision was: music or teacher. Here I am with my new album.
HMA: What is the branch of philosophy that you more passionate about?
Debauchery: I think my focus was on Political Philosophy and the ideas of the National Socialism. But that was more a coincidence. I’m most interested in wars like the 30 Years War or the First World War but themes like that were no part of the offering at the University.
HMA: Does philosophy creep in making records for Debauchery?
Debauchery: No, I don’t think so. I studied Politics, History and Philosophy. But really interested I always was in Fantasy literature and table-top wargaming. That’s what inspires my lyrics and that’s also the reason I developed my DEBAUCHERY background World of Blood Gods as you can find in Carnage 1 and 2 and on the homepage.
HMA: Thanks for the interview and for your interest in Heavy Music Artwork.
Debauchery: Thanks to you too and HACK SLASH KILL
