Epitaphe is a death metal band from the French Alps. We are four long-time friends who started to play music together in our teenage years. Back at that time, our Death Metal was really raw and abrasive. Over the years, it slowly moved towards something more doomed, nuanced and atmospheric. 2016 marks the real emergence of the band, especially in the way we conceive our music. Our first album, ‘I’, was released on June 2019 by Aesthetic Death.
The album consists of one hour of cavernous death and doom metal. Mainly influenced by bands such as Disembowelment and Incantation, the music frequently blends with other elements from Black Metal to Psychedelic Rock, by way of explorations into Drone and Ambient. ‘I’ is conceived as an introspective journey, navigating through different waters: eerie atmospheres, rampant outbursts of chaotic anger, lugubrious lamentations.
Lyrically, the album deals with inner reflections about death, chaos, the vastness of psyche…The common theme that flows through all songs would be the ineluctable notion and sense of odd emptiness that we carry since the day we’re born.
We don’t really have a proper fixation, it is more that we have multiple sources of inspiration that build what we are. It is art – movies, paintings, books, poetry. It is our environment – the big mountains and the woods that surround us, the change of seasons and climate of our region. Deep emotions and different steps of life – despair, solitude, angst and so on… The consciousness of our death, that leads us to a certain inborn yearning for answers. Knowing all things must end might be the main driving creative force behind our music.
