SYMPATHY FOR THE IGNORANT WITH JAMES MATTHEW NICADEMUS
Art: Alkoholtrus

Our music is thrash metal our way. Chunky riffs, slamming bass and drums, lyrics that speak. It’s exciting music to listen to.

The creative process starts when someone has an idea. A riff usually will bring out a hook that is then turned into another riff. The person with this idea brings it to the others or keeps it and works on it a bit more before bringing it to the rehearsal spot. Everything gets worked out from there. Then we demo these ideas, or in the case of this record, the demo becomes the album. ‘Sympathy for the Ignorant’ was written very organically. I mean that we didn’t spend time re-working things and overthinking. We just wanted to make a metal record, and we did just that.

Music has been the only thing I truly believed in that has taken care of me in return. Music is powerful. It is a universal language that we all somehow understand. While on this planet, I’m going to make music that makes me feel better because I know a lot of people out there going through shit just like me that need to feel better too. We might not write love songs but consider it stress relief.

I want to say 4th or 5th grade, I got Metallica’ Ride the Lighting’, and it was all over. Metallica only the next couple of years. I cut my teeth on Metallica. All three of us did. Jay, my stepbrother, and I started the band Diamond Plate in Worth, Illinois, in 2004. I went on to do two albums on Earache records. Fast forward, and now we’re here again. Playing the music we want to play for ourselves and anyone who wants to be a part of it. Metallica, Pantera, Megadeth, Death, Testament, Exodus, Dream Theater, Opeth, Arch Enemy, Carcass, Nevermore, Anthrax, Slayer, Alice in Chains, Nine Inch Nails, and Porcupine Tree are the bands that changed my perspective early on.

There are musicians, and there are entertainers. The people that figure out how to do both are the ones who go far in this business. But why is music so important? It’s the only thing in this world that makes any fucking sense. The emotions music can bring out of you when listening or writing. It’s therapeutic. You just need the right stuff for you. Right now, I need to create, so that’s what I’m doing. Music is just good for you.
