A Pyrrhic Existence by Greg Chandler
Esoteric formed in 1992 and started as a six-piece band with 3 guitars, bass, vocals and drums. We play predominantly slow, heavy, psychedelic, extreme metal. We have undergone some line-up changes over the 27 years but 2 of the original members have always remained. We have had keyboard players also covering the years between 2003-2009 and 2012-2014. We started off with a demo recording in 1993 that led to a record deal with Aesthetic Death, albums in 1994 and 1997 followed. Then we signed with Eibon records and released our 3rd album in 1999. In 2003 we signed with Season of Mist Records and have released our last 4 albums with them, in 2004, 2008, 2011 and the seventh album is due out in November 2019. We have played live in various countries including most of Europe, USA, and Russia.
The new album is titled “A Pyrrhic Existence” and releases on 2CD and 3LP formats on Season of Mist records on November 8th 2019. The running time is 98 minutes and it contains 6 songs. The band’s influences are vast, from early death metal, black metal, doom/death, doom, industrial, dark ambient, post-rock, psychedelic, progressive rock, classical, trip-hop and so on. Our style can best be described as extremely dark, heavy music that is mostly slow but also has occasional bursts of pace. The atmospheres are strongly enhanced with effects and soundscapes that we create with our instruments using pedals and real-time modulation and become a part of the performance as much as the playing of the instruments.
I would say that we mainly draw inspiration from our past and present experiences, emotions, philosophies, and from exploring the darker sides of the human mind and emotions. This is what we like to express in our music. To create music that can at times be unsettling, unpleasant, chaotic and horrific. Of course, it contains other emotions and states of mind too, sorrow, catharsis, tranquillity, depression, and there is also some shade amongst the darkness.www.Esotericuk.net
