A PALE BLUE DOT WITH KEVIN CALÌ, FELLA
Fella: With this record, we gathered every era of the band. People who followed us over the years can expect to find familiar sounds from every album as well as completely new styles of Dreamshade music. We felt free to write whatever sounded DS to us in many different ways, and I think the audience can easily recognise our sound regardless of the song’s style. I believe in the power of songwriting and feel like ours is very recognisable. Also, I love the production of A Pale Blue Dot more than any of our previous records.

Kevin: We have always only written lyrics and songs that come from our personal experiences and reflections. That is just our need to communicate what we feel with other people. I would never change our freedom of expression. It’s just too important for us as artists to be able to create and express whatever we feel at whatever time we want, and we will never take this for granted. Many people relate so much to our songs because of that feeling of freedom we feel when we write.

Fella: The setup needed is just a free mind. First of all, you have to have good riffs to create this type of song, so don’t be afraid to throw away parts that you’re unsure of. We believe that every section of the song has to be pushed to its full potential. We always want to be sure to surprise the listener. I think you need to focus on what makes a good song and not on what the audience expects from you. Also, we spend a lot of time working on lyrics and vocal melodies, patterns and styles. I think the right time to make a record is when you really feel the urge to say something.

Kevin: I wouldn’t say so. We write only when we feel very inspired, and that can happen for a million different reasons. We don’t really follow a ‘dogma’ as we prefer to be surprised by what happens in our lives, and we’re happy to learn new perspectives as we grow up. I can say that Metallica really rocked my world. I listened to them for the first time at the age of 6, when my brother played ‘The black album’ for me. I couldn’t believe my ears, it was an instant shock, and from that moment, I knew that music would never leave my life. To this day, I still am inspired by James Hetfield because I think his style is very unique and recognisable, and Metallica’s songs will forever be remembered in history, even if you are not a metal fan.

Fella: Music is a lot of different things. To me, it’s an incredible type of media because it allows the artists to communicate at different levels that are not just speaking or writing. Music can literally take the listener to a different place and let you live the performer’s experience while creating your own. Art, in general, is one of the most important things in the World for me. It helps to really understand Human beings and pushes the minds of both the creators and the “spectators” beyond all boundaries.
