The God within – Interview with King ov Hell
Heavy Music Artwork caught up with King ov Hell, bassist and co-founder of Norwegian black metal God Seed (former Gorgoroth and Sahg) during the tour with Cult of Luna last May in London to find out more about the band and possible new album after the debut release “I Begin” in 2012.
HMA: Hi King, thanks for this interview with Heavy Music Artwork! God Seed is part of the Beyond the Redshift experience. Could you tell us more about the event and what is your contribution and involvement?
God Seed: This event takes part of our bigger tour we have done with Cult of Luna. We did a co-headlining tour now for 13 shows I think? This event is the last show of this tour.
HMA: Yeah, very interesting. How God Seed got involved?
God Seed: Yes, now this event is basically curated by Cult of Luna. They are bringing something special and they have special members coming in as it’s their night but we take part of their event because we’ve been touring all the time.
HMA: As part of God Seed’s biography we read “The will to grow. The god within man. The god within nature, and the will to reach one’s highest potential.” Why are these topics important to God Seed?
God Seed: That’s a very huge question because it involves so many aspects of how you view reality, how you view the world order and stuff like that, but it is basically saying that there is no God but yourself. You have the God within you. Taking time off to actually see your own potential, rise up to be the Superman. All of those things. It’s important, and of course always the will to grow, with that also the will to change.
So many people are stagnant in their roles, or work situations, or mind-sets and what not. You always need to challenge yourself to be able to grow and to be closer to your inner truth.
HMA: Are there songs in your music that serve as inspiration for what it seems is a spiritual evolution?
God Seed: I think all of the songs we are making are part of a bigger picture. It’s part of our bigger scenery so to speak. It’s harder to say that this exact riff you’re making this riffs or this atmosphere or this lyric is very more important than anything. It’s more of seeing the whole, everything at once instead of focusing on details I would say.
HMA: What inspiration finds its way to your music?
God Seed: That’s hard to say. Because I’m not really conscious about my spirit, inspirational sources but of course there is music I like more than other music. I would prefer to listen to Led Zeppelin than dance music for example.
HMA: Do you listen to any black metal?
God Seed: Black metal? I listen to a few bands; I like Mayhem, Burzum, Immortal, stuff like that.
HMA: What you think about the current black metal scene?
God Seed: I’m not sure it’s, I’m more interested in people have a unique voice and there are lots of black metal bands that are conserving music. That means that they will reproduce music that Darkthrone, Burzum or Mayhem made. I think it’s more important about actually creating music that is your major self as your own identity and that’s what we try to do with God Seed too, is make God Seed into something unique that no band has really come up with expression.
HMA: Does Black Metal still serve as the perfect medium to express such complex emotion? And why that is?
God Seed: It’s hard to say because for Darkthrone or for Burzum or whatever when they are making their music it’s of course very important because if someone tries to be them it’s not important.
HMA: About your music video, What is the storyline or narrative for the video “Alt Liv “?
God Seed: That’s very connected to everything that is the nature within yourself rather than, it has the ability to help you grow. That’s what it’s all about; it’s everything that’s within you that want you to grow as a person. You need to focus on that. That’s where might be a little bit different than a normal black metal band who will talk about all these negative forces and all that stuff. For me, it’s exactly the opposite is more of getting everything that is natural within you, and all that is life-bringing. Black metal could be life metal instead of black metal for me.
Wear it, of course, Christianity or all kinds of religious thoughts will be a hinder or be something like a plague that will make people have very much difficulty, so finding the truth and be able to grow because they go into that flock mentality. They don’t really find their own unique self.
HMA: Symbolism is constantly present in your work. Why is this important?
God Seed: Symbolism in itself, if they are used correctly can make people think. They have all of these symbols that maybe make people not think too, but if it’s used correctly it’s more open and you can fit more of yourself into it, and it’s easier to deliver larger meanings.
HMA: When is the new album going to come out?
God Seed: Yeah, I’ve written all the material for it. We need to rehearse as a band; we need obviously go to the studio. Beginning of 2015 or something maybe?
HMA: Are you going to do any audio-visual effect today for this festival you’re doing?
God Seed: Yeah, we are going to use a little bit more of projectors and a little bit more of imagery on stage for this show. We are working on our live shows now so this is just the beginning of something that hopefully will be very good.
HMA: Okay, thank you very much, King! Thank you for your time.
God Seed: You’re welcome.
