A Culinary Cacophony by Yonn
Hailing from Sydney, Horrisonous formed in late 2015 and comprise a handful of hardened members of the local underground scene (Backyard Mortuary, Golgothan Remains, Canine & Illimitable Dolor to name a few). Horrisonous deliver aural slime, decay and misery by means of an ageless brand of Death Metal that’s equally ponderous, crushing and fervent, enhanced with slithering tempos and influenced by the likes of Bolt Thrower, Asphyx, Autopsy, Death, early Paradise Lost, Celtic Frost, Carcass, Dismember and Incantation.
A cursory glance at some of the album´s song titles (‘Crispy Chunks of the Obese’, ‘Nourishment Through Excrement’, ‘Number of the Feast’…) and one could potentially assume Horrisonous is a hokey gore band. While their noses are no doubt in tune with life’s foulest recesses, Horrisonous are deadly serious about their disgusting Death Metal. Their debut album, ‘A Culinary Cacophony’, digs deeply into the doom and serves up serious helpings of up-tempo gallop and blast. It’s a world-eating sound that evokes a creepiness quite at odds with such otherwise tongue-in-cheek titles. Brazenly adorned with garishly gruesome cover art courtesy of Rod Scott, Horrisonous offer a horrifying symphony of sickness with ‘A Culinary Cacophony’!
We got here through a shared appreciation of extreme metal, specifically the slow & heavy ancient style of doom/death metal. A number of us have worked together in other bands (both past & present), but the initial seeds were sown after the demise of Backyard Mortuary in 2014 (in which Bianca, Stu & myself were involved with). Bianca & Hannah got the ball rolling in 2015 with the idea of paying tribute to old school death metal, Stu & Dan joined on guitar a short while later, and I decided to step out from behind the kit and move to vocals when they were having trouble finding someone to scream obscenities at our legions of fans. After the release of The Plague Doctors EP in 2016, Hannah moved to Canada so we poached Aled from Golgothan Remains to take over as blast master general, and we’ve kept a steady lineup ever since.
Our latest release is ‘A Culinary Cacophony’, a hideous slab of morbid death metal, obsessed with the subject of using homo sapiens as the primary ingredients when preparing a delectable feast. These stories are told via our interpretation of classic late 80s/early 90s death & doom metal – we would not exist if it were not for Mental Funeral, Realm of Chaos, Forest of Equilibrium, Horrified, Mortal Throne of Nazarene, The Rack, and of course Symphonies of Sickness. From a lyrical perspective, the importance of Macabre’s body of work must also not be overlooked.
Our inspiration is pure and simple – proper fucking death metal. If there was any fixation, that would be it. We make heavy, slow-moving, primitive death metal with a lyrical penchant for sludge-filled hatred of humanity.
