I draw with passion, I give all my heart when I work on a design
I’m from France and live in Paris. I have been drawing since I was a kid. I discovered heavy metal with Iron Maiden at the library. I saw Eddie, on the cover of the ‘No prayer for the dying’ album and I immediately fell in love with it. I drew Eddie everywhere I could in my notebook, on the desk… everywhere. I studied at an art school and started my professional life as a webdesigner at an agency. I always wanted to work with metal bands, I’m fascinated by the imagery developed in the merch, album covers, etc. But I’ve never had the opportunity to work with a band. One day, in 2013 Burial In The Sky from Mount Carmel, PA found me on Instagram and gave me the opportunity to do their t-shirt design and from there everything went fast. The word of mouth worked well.
I begun with traditional tools like pens. I draw only in black and white and use the technique of ‘dotwork’, use of linework and stippling for the shading. I was not comfortable with the color, but today I love to mix of the darkness of metal and fluorescent colors. Bands often come up with ideas, some bands know exactly what they want and come with a great brief, some come without any idea. I always demand to listen to the band’s music to help me in the art direction. I’m also a guitar player in a metal band, so I know how the visual art is as important as music.
Instagram is a great source of inspiration. I discovered a lot of interesting artists. Websites like Heavy Music Artwork is a great thing to discover artists. I never seen another website like HMA, it’s cool to see a website that focused on the artists behind the artworks of bands. My inspiration mostly comes to the horror and gore films. I love the B and Z serial movies. Experimental films like Shinya Tsukamoto, more particularly films like ‘Tetsuo’. In Heavy metal art, guys like Par Olofsson, Grindesign, Godmachine, Coki Greenway… inspires me a lot.
I had several exhibitions here, in France and one in Belgium, it was a great experience in an abandoned chapel for the supposed last day of 2012. I have two exhibitions coming up, one in 2016 in France: my solo exhibition at the concert hall ‘Chez Paulette’ Sunday, March 6th, 2016, and a participation to the Delirium Festival Metal Fest, Saturday, April 23th, 2016.
Thanks a lot for giving me the opportunity to respond to this interview.
