Flammarion By Sovereign
Exploring the boundaries of matter, spirit, consciousness and the universe with the Metal of death as the instrument – since 2015. Khanus introduced themselves to the metal audience in 2016 with the ‘Rites Of Fire’ EP, a piece of shamanic metal of death perfectly underlining the ritualistic feel and the spiritual qualities of their music. Two years later LordT from the UK joined as permanent drummer and the band is back with its first full-length album, ‘Flammarion’, a monumental achievement that confirms the uniqueness of their proposal.
Khanus’ Shamanic Metal of Death oscillates between trance-inducing melodies almost bordering on hypnotic psychedelia and the primitive pulse of black/death metal, all seen through a distorting avant-garde lens that exalts the weirdness of the style without sacrificing brutality and aggressiveness. Together with LordT powerful drumming, Sovereign’s theatrical growls and nervous guitar playing incarnate the primordial side of Khanus, while Meltiis’ majestic soprano choirs play a more spiritual chord, adding a distinctive touch to the music, always incredibly dense and richly textured.
‘Flammarion’ was composed in the same creative current as our debut EP ‘Rites Of Fire’, yet the manifestation took a couple of years to realize. It is a modern grimoire which deciphers the unfathomable depths of the human soul by revealing its mystical and divine origins, as reflected in pagan magic, occultism, mythology, ancient superstitions and esoteric knowledge that crossed mankind’s path throughout the ages. ‘Flammarion’ owns the irresistible charm of all that sacred culture, and burns it alive at the stake of underground metal.
Following strong intuitive guidance, we open with a truly personal revisitation of Darkthrone ‘The Serpent’s Harvest’ including Nordic chanting, shaman drums and female vocals. From there we start our own journey with ‘A Timeless Sacred Art’, our interpretation of the Major Arcana XIV Art (the Art of Alchemy) followed by ‘Titan Souls’ an existential pondering of mythological Titans’ relation to our own human origins. ‘Ageless’ challenges the thought of linear time as such and the entities behind the veil of time.
The second half of the album continues on the subject of Alchemy with ‘Uncreated’ – Like the dragon [uroboros] A being without beginning or end. ‘Secular Spiritual Existence’ takes a look at the human being in the 21st century that goes through an existential crisis asking all the right questions but not realizing the answers. ‘Surrupu’ was inspired by apart from the Epic of Gilgamesh where the Surrupu plague is unleashed upon mankind, it’s depicted from the gods’ point of view in relation to their creation. We finalise our offering with ‘Magick and Numbers’, a modern rebellion-anthem for ourselves to start understanding deeper meanings behind our magical everyday lives.
Khanus the name itself is a combination of two words Khaa as the shamanic ether of the unseen worlds and Nous as Knowledge of these hidden worlds and realities. Thus it has been from the very start a vessel to voice my personal journey and interests in the search for knowledge and meaning through the means of Shamanic Metal of Death. The key driving force is my intuition and we go where it takes us – what we were meant to do.
The title of the album ‘Flammarion’ comes after Camille Flammarion the Frech astronomy ‘celebrity’ of his time in the late 1800s who boldly ventured into unknown territories in his studies and theories. After stumbling into the mysterious yet very well known ‘Flammarion Engraving’ found in one of his books I felt an instant rush of inspiration and thus together with Luciano from I Voidhanger Records and Pierre Perichaud from Business for Satan who illustrated this magnificent piece of art we decided to take that piece and bring it into the 21st century infused with a few selected concepts of our Shamanic offering. After agreeing on the concept of the art we gave Pierre the creative freedom to interpret that as he best saw fit and it ended up being a stunning monochrome.
Our inspiration is driven by an intuitive shamanic force on a philosophical & metaphysical journey to unfold the ever-expanding cosmos and its secrets with our limited perception of reality.
