Omnium Gatherum Jukka Pelkonen Interview
Hailing from Finland, Omnium Gatherum is a band playing fierce death metal with breathtaking melodies and progressive originality for people in the metal field looking for something different that still is catchy. A band that truly walks it’s own path proudly and shows some new exciting sides on identifiable character. A band of many directions and styles, some of them clearly visible while others were more unseen – namely working and keeping it all together under the moniker of melodic life-and-death metal and bastardizing it with various influences. Adult oriented death metal that it is! Heavy Music Artwork welcomes them!
HMAW: I believe “Omnium Gatherum” means “The Sun”, how did you come to this name, which I believe is Latin?
Omnium Gatherum: Oh you do!? I’ve never heard that OG would mean “the sun”, where ever did you hear that? OG means the “gathering of different people or happenings”. The name was originally chosen by bunch of, at the time, teenage minds. Yes the name is certainly Latin but I don’t think it means “the sun” but it would be really cool if it did,and in the end who knows maybe in some ancient dialect it means “the sun”.
HMAW: Tell us about your latest release “Beyond”?
Omnium Gatherum: ‘Beyond’ is our new sweetheart. Fresh and alive :). We are really really satisfied with the result indeed. ‘Beyond’ is same time the continuation of our musical style but still it offers fresh and inventive perspective to the world of OG. The creation of the album was achieved by Jukka and Markus with their trustworthy style of cooperation and dialogue. Markus sends some ideas and basic structures of the songs to Jukka and he writes and engineers the lyrics into them. Also we always make some demos of the songs to be able to hear the song played by the whole group. We think ‘Beyond’ is of course our beat release yet and we are being honest about this. If we would think it sucks we wouldn’t even had released it and told the label that they have to wait and let us come up with some better stuff. Gladly that did not happen and ‘Beyond’ is certainly everything we hoped and expected it to be.
HMAW: What kind of challenges and pleasures did you experience in recording as well as creating the album?
Omnium Gatherum: The challenges are always similar when recording a new album. Likes of that the equipment don’t brake down or the vocalist is able to keep his voice, can we make this on time etc. You really can’t predict what exactly will happen in the recording sessions. It is always something you know to possibly to expect and a full surprise at the same time. Kind of paradoxical is it not :). One major challenge on this particular session was the time. We had a certain amount of time with our sound recorder because he had some other projects waiting also. So at one point it was really hectic and stressful to get all of our timetables fixed properly to get everything swinging. Ultimately we managed to do this and the end is written and composed history. Of the pleasures I can say that the recording sessions are always filled with different kind of enjoyment from free time games to damn good company and occasional drinking. So I can say that despite I don’t remember any specific happening there were many. Maybe they are combined already in my mind and I can’t remember any individual one. Good times altogether.
HMAW: Your album cover is interesting and intriguing, it has a sense of loneliness and desolation. Can you tell us about the concept behind it?
Omnium Gatherum: There have been many people saying that the cover has a sad feeling to it. In my opinion nothing could be further from the truth. I think the cover is very uplifting indeed. The stormy sea represents the ever perpetuating human flame and the clear-cloudy sky is the everlasting spirit. So no downsides were meant to be seen on the cover. Of course everyone can interpret the cover any way they choose. It is their privilege. One of the metaphors on the cover is the fact that one must be ready for all kinds of weathers in one existence.
HMAW: The art direction was taken by…?
Omnium Gatherum: All the artwork is made based upon my ideas and lyrics and made to live by Olli Lappalainen who has been our trusted cover artist and a friend for a long time. Olli has a really good visual insight of the thematics and concepts I offer him. He is a kind of hidden member in the band :).
HMAW: Also, your previous releases have the same look and feel… how does the story continue?
Omnium Gatherum: Yes in a way they do. Musically and lyrically there indeed is a continuation in the albums. Still everyone of the last three albums work individually also. That really is the main point of our creations. To give a sense of continuation without losing the individuality on the way. That should be everyones guide in life in general :). Lyrically the story unfolds to this before mentioned direction and talks about one’s existence as the unfolding oneness veiled in the illusions of duality. These things are not put in to a competition in any way rather they are ever in dynamic effect compared to each other. Musically ‘Beyond’ takes OG to even more melodic level than ever before but still contains the most aggressive stuff in OG’s history so far. A nice combo we think.
HMAW: It seems that “Beyond” has the same affinity as “New world shadow”. Would you say that the music holds the same prospective?
Omnium Gatherum: As I said before it does hold similar prospective still looking things from the fresh and inventive perspective.
HMAW: Plans on taking the album on the road?
Omnium Gatherum: Of course and we already have begun. We just got back from Japan in which we toured for two weeks (eleven gigs/thirteen days). We are also starting our Finnish tour which lasts until beginning of April. After that a little brake and then we are off to Europe to blast the hell out of those dudes during May. We are trying to play as many gigs as possible because that is one of the most important reasons we are doing this. Almost nothing beats the overall feeling you get from touring. And the experiences you get, well they are really the ones you cannot purchase anywhere.
HMAW: Plans on taking the album on the road?
Omnium Gatherum: YES!!!!
HMAW: Thanks for joining Heavy Music Artwork any final words?
Omnium Gatherum: Stay metal and see ya all on the road!!!
