Endarkenment (Illumination Through Putrefaction) By Paingrinder
Onirophagus is a Spanish doom/death band born under the musical influence of My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, Hypocrisy, Ophis, Asphyx, Immolation, Incantation, Autopsy and Evoken among others. The band was created in September 2011 in order to compose music like that created by the great extreme metal bands of the early 90s. The band is currently formed by Moregod (guitar), Uretra (drums), Paingrinder (Voices), Shoggoth (Guitar), Desecrator (Guitar) and Grindmad (Bass). Their music is built on the blending of slow-paced Doom riffs and furious Death Metal bursts in the sphere of Morbid Angel. Anguished darkness, maximum sickness and harmonious leanings intertwine in the same tune.
Onirophagus was born in 2011 with the intention of resurrecting that Doom/Death of the early 90s but without forgetting our Death Metal roots. ‘Endarkenment: Illumination Through Putrefaction’ is a perfect balance between the slowest and most classic doom and the most furious death metal. This album was slow-burning. It was a very hard time as several of our components suffered many personal problems. The inner pain made a big dent and I think it is reflected quite a lot in this work. There are riffs that tear your soul apart and today when we play live several of those songs we do not stop shuddering because of the high emotional content it has for us.
Our style is old school Death/Doom. For fans of the first albums of My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost or Anathema, going through Hypocrisy, Morbid Angel, Autopsy, Nechros Christos or more current influences like Svartidaudi, Mgla, Slaegt, and so on. We have a great variety of influences. Each member is a world apart and we listen to everything from Merciful Fate to Depeche Mode, from Terrorizer to Sisters of mercy. We don’t like modern sounds or anything to do with Deathcore, Metalcore or Nu Metal.
We usually talk about negativity and mental and physical self-destruction. Everything around us that can serve to destroy our sanity. ‘Endarkenment (Illumination Through Putrefaction)’, goes further, we have created a concept different from the rest of our work. It is based on Endarkenment (Illumination Through Putrefaction) or vice versa, on how we can achieve putrefaction through enlightenment. How can we reach the spiritual climax through something rotten and dirty or how can we reach something ungodly through the false spiritual goodness that reigns in everything around us? The lyrics of our last work fit perfectly with our compositions since at any moment you can find beautiful and melodic riffs and in a matter of seconds it transforms into a dark rhythm with Black Metal tints.
Adam Burke’s cover I think fits perfectly. Our previous covers were absent from human life, only desolate landscapes, we didn’t want to include anything of life, just darkness and desolation. In ‘Endarkenment (Illumination Through Putrefaction)’ we have broken with the past and we wanted to include an amorphous, asexual being crowned by an aura of enlightenment, but all that surrounds him is blasphemous. A terrifying swamp, a withered lotus flower that symbolizes our repulsion of religions, in this case, represented by the Buddhist lotus flower. We met Adam through Instagram and his paintings took our breath away. It was very easy to work with him and the communication we had was very professional.
All of our band members love cinema. In fact, Paingrinder collaborates in a podcast about cinema. Our inspiration is based on negativity. We don’t like to talk about politics, but seeing the misfortunes politicians commit, it’s good for us to get our bile out of our mouths. We are children of nihilism, hatred, vomit, sin of the flesh and darkness.
