SARKE is a mesmerizing journey through dark and soothing soundscapes, inspired by legends like Mayhem, Slayer, Darkthrone, Celtic Frost, Black Sabbath, Candlemass, Death, Motorhead and Kreator.
HMA: To start with… your current line-up presents Norway’s Metal all-stars. Can you tell me the challenges and the benefits on working together?
Sarke: I don’t see the band as a star line up. I think I speak for all of us that this is a band like any other band. When Sarke went from a one-man band to a complete line up I just called friends and asked if they would join the band. I have known all this members for a long time. That they are known and very good is just a bonus I will say. The hard thing is that we are often busy and its not some many times when everybody can meet to rehearse, to play live or be in the studio. The benefit is that they all are very good and we don’t have to rehearse that much.
HMA: “Aruagint” third in line under the belt… tell us about the record and how it developed?
Sarke: I wanted to stay in the same direction. Both in style and sound. I think you can find some of the same elements in all 3 albums. Maybe the sound on Aruagint is a bit more heavy and rough than Oldarhian. We used the same studio and people on this record as the previous albums. Some of the same equipment as well and I am pleased about the new album.
HMA: In an interview you stated “Oldarhian” is “direct and primitive”. Why are these points so important and relevant in Sarke?
Sarke: Its important for me that the music of Sarke is true music. Not a lot of fancy stuff. With direct and primitive I also mean you can hear a clear sound were every instrument is soundable. What you hear is what you get. Almost the feeling you are at a Sarke rehearsal. Not copy a lot of riffs or drums in the studio.
HMA: Does “Aruagint” follows on the same steps?
Sarke: Yes, it’s a new Sarke album. It’s not something brand new. Of course it sounds different and its 9 new tracks. I also think we have taken some of the songs in a new directions, but it is in the Sarke spirit. I think Sarke sounds different than other bands, so its better to develop our own style further.
HMA: How else would you describe your sound and creative vision?
Sarke: I want the sound to be clear, raw and heavy and that’s what we all are aiming for. My vision is to create music based on other bands that has inspired me since I got into metal in 1987. Of course that is a lot of bands from different style of music, so Sarke will not sound like one other band.
HMA: …any references or inspirations worth the attention?
Sarke: The first metal bands I got into was Slayer, Manowar, Mayhem and King Diamond to mention some of them.
HMA: All three covers are very minimal and I would say unusual in respect to the aesthetics of Metal. What was the creative though behind them?
Sarke: Its Asgeir, the drummer in Sarke that’s doing the layout and finds the front cover that he is using. Its different people that have done the covers. The minimalistic covers are a bit in the vein of the music, clean and primitive.
HMA: I red a few of your interviews and I have noticed that you are a man of a few words with a direct answers. So I ask… what gets you motivated to tell more…
Sarke: I usually answer the question I have been asked. It also depends on the question how long the answer will be. The motivation is that we will soon have a new album out and I hope people will check it out. If reading an interview will help that is good.
HMA: What are your passions and dissatisfactions?
Sarke: My passion is to make different and special music. I know that some people don’t like our music, but I also know that many do because it’s different and its not hype or trend music. In music I cant find any dissatisfactions for me.
HMA: Lastly… what keeps creativity always in check?
Sarke: You always start fresh when you are starting on a new album. The inspiration is for me the same. Dark pantings, nature and dark lyrics.
HMA: Thanks for your time and your interest in Heavy Music Artwork.
Sarke: Thanks you and thanks for choosing Sarke. Hope people will check out our latest work.
