We Of Scorn By Kyle Severn
Shed the Skin is a Satanic old-school death metal juggernaut. Created by pioneers Kyle Severn (Incantation, Acheron) and Matt Sorg (Ringworm, Blood of Christ). After playing a successful memorial show to a fallen friend and bandmate Tom Rojack of Cleveland’s own Blood of Christ, the seed was sown. Never forgetting Tom’s amazing talent, musicianship and contributions to the Satanic metal of the early ’90s. Matt and Kyle chose to renew that in Shed the Skin, aptly named after a Blood of Christ tune of the same.
After the success of that show, they briefly recruited Blood of Christ tribute member Duane Morris (Embalmer, Decrepit, Kurnugia). Sadly due to scheduling difficulties that were unavoidable the sceptre had passed. A veteran of the death metal community and longtime friend Ash Thomas (Vladimirs, Estuary, FaithXtractor) took up the duties of guitar/vocals. The addition of Ed Stephens (Civil Disobedience, Ringworm, Beyond Fear) and his amazing talent solidified the lineup. Even Brian Boston (From the Depths) displayed his eerie, Satanic keyboard accents and intros to the “Harrowing Faith” release. As did the strings of Damon Conn for their second full length “We of Scorn”.
Efforts and talent merged as they began forging their rare form of Satanic death metal. The first offering, a 7″ EP entitled “Rebirth Through Brimstone” recorded at Bad Back Studios in Cleveland with engineer Dave Johnson and the legendary Dan Swano of Unisound. Released through the Cleveland institution, Hells Headbangers.
With excitement never-fading Matt and Kyle immediately starting working on new material. The result was the creation of their first full length “Harrowing Faith”. 10 brand-new songs of Satanic death. Noteworthy is one originally was a Blood Of Christ track that Matt and Tom collaborated on in years past which was lost till this release. The trend endured and this album as the 7” was recorded in Ohio and mixed in Sweden. The cover art, a black & white Satanic masterpiece by James “Human Furnace” Bulloch (Ringworm) would not be the last. Nor the lyrical contributions of Chuck Sherwood (Incantation) on all releases. The support to this effort was enormous and only strengthened their convictions as seen in a written review or live performance.
Gaining momentum their second full length was spawned. “We of Scorn”. Considered as melodic as it is ripping by reviewers and fans alike. Another 10 sonic offerings were vomited forth from the ashes of “Harrowing Faith” Even a re-recording of the 7” track “Luminous Transgression” revitalizing the early effort with new zeal. The monochrome sorcery of James Bulloch emblazoning its cover and progressing the imagery. Holding to the battle-tested formula of recording, mastering and label. These four architects of satanic madness carry forth. Matt, Kyle, Ash and Ed had yet again proven their talent and dedication to making satanic death in studio and stage.
Our latest release ‘We of scorn’ is the title of the follow up to our debut record “Harrowing Faith’. Shed The Skin is still a fairly new band with our first release titled “ Rebirth Through Brimstone” which was a 7” EP released in 2014, Harrowing was just a little over a year later, and now our latest LP released the just last year 2018. All available and released through Hellsheadbangers Records. This record brings you another 10 tracks of pure Death/Trash Metal written and played the only way us old goats know how to do it. With the 4 of us reaching upon 50 years of age and been playing metal each around 30 years, that’s over 100 years of old school death fucking metal, if that gives you an idea of what Shed The Skin has to offer.
We’ve seemed to have created a formula and have stuck with it now as we start from Riff one. Matt writes all the riffs and structures late at night at home while under the influence of eatables ( This helps him get in the zone). He’s a night owl and I’m a morning person ( when I’m not on tour), so Its funny when I wake up and get all these messages, it will start with one riff that he’s excited about, then another, then a partial structure, then a full structure… and so on… Then the next day, he’ll usually replay it all and send me a cleaner version. He gets inspired and writes it all pretty quick. I think “We Of Scorn” he may have had it all within a few weeks, minus one tune that he added closer to recording time. I’ll then work on it at my own pace and when I feel comfortable with it, we’ll schedule a weekend at my studio, jam the shit out of it and make a demo. Then our next get together we’ll record and track drums at my place. We don’t want to over-analyze it too much, we just record the moment’s energy of playing newly created metal together. Once we have drums, he’ll track rhythms, Matt and Ash will track leads, Ed will track Bass around that time with Matt, and Ash does Vocals at his studio at home. We’ll send Ash the practice demo so he can start working on words placements. Since our beginning Chuck Sherwood (Incantation) has been writing the Lyrics, Ash does a hell of a job making them all fit. We’re all based in Ohio, but live several hours from one another, so the convenience of tracking at home is awesome. We are currently tracking our 3rd LP right now, and the same formula was used again!
Again the main inspiration for this bands music is Blood of Christ. We play the styles of music that we are fans of, just as BOC being established in 1991 and was heavily influenced from the early 90’s death metal scene coming out of Sweden bands like Carnage, Entombed, Dismember as well as the rest of the world Autopsy,Impetigo and all early Death Metal, Thrash and Hardcore so we just continue to play what we feel. The Lyrical content is from Lyricist Chuck Sherwood. We are a Satanic Death Metal Band, so we asked him to write dark, demented, satanic lyrics and stories of death and torture to fit the music, and we feel has accomplished that very well.
