The end of Carnage Interview with Aad of Sinister
Sinister play straightforward Slayer-esque death metal, a tried and true but still effective and popular style that has largely relegated Sinister to second-tier status. They’ve neither had the originality nor the musical chops to favourably compare to other, similar Continental death metal bands such as Vader, an obvious comparison.
HMA: Thanks for joining me in this interview and for your interest in Heavy Music Artwork.
Sinister: Of course man no problem at all.
HMA: A few months have passed since the release of “The Carnage Ending”, what kind of response have you had so far both from media and fan base?
Sinister: The reactions are absolute amazing from the media and fans, they all think that this is one of our best records we ever did… so a bigger compliment we can not get I think.
HMA: How did the record develop in terms of production, songwriting and creative direction?
Sinister: Before we started with creating new songs Bastiaan and me talked how the new songs had to sound. For sure it had to sound like a mix from the old and new Sinister. Bastiaan comes with a complete track to the practice room and there we make some small changes so that everybody is happy with it. I think at the end we did a killer job because it turns out the way we had in mind.
HMA: Your current line up is has developed in what I like to consider a super group. What kind of challenges did you experience along they way in recording the record?
Sinister: Thanks for the nice words about the line-up man really good to hear this. The recordings where going great man ,no problems at all. All members did there job even faster than we expected but this was only they where preperd absolute for 100%. This was great so we had more time for the final mix.
HMA: What is the story behind the artwork and lyrical theme?
Sinister: A demon how was fighting against everything what is holy and you can see that the carnage is over because all angels are slaughterd or begging for mercy.
HMA: I believe the man behind the art is by Mike Hrubovcak? How was the band involved in the process?
Sinister: Yes and he did also “The Silent Howling” and “Legacy of Ashes” from Sinister. I come always with the ideas for the new cover and than Mike starts to work on this and send me every time previews so I can say or things have to be a bit different. Most of the time how is also putting his own ideas in it but that is no problem for me because i know it will be only better. He will be also the man for the next sinister cover.
HMA: Another master cover that deserves to be mentioned is “Prophecies Denied” also by Tomasz “Graal” Daniłowicz.
Sinister: Hell yeah… this cover is so amazing for 100% a master piece.
HMA: Most of your releases maintain the same visceral tones, would you say that the music also holds the same qualities?
Sinister: We play what we like and that is death metal the old school way. When you like to listen to a Sinister record you like to hear death metal right?? No other bull shit, so that’s why we always stick to our sound.
HMA: Given the right time and budget, who would be the right graphic artist that deserves to work with Sinister?
Sinister: That is hard to say man because we are happy with the people how are working now for Sinister, but Dan Seagrave and Juanjo Castellano are also killer.
HMA: On Metal Archives under lyrical theme you have “Occultism, Death, Satanism, Lovecraft”. Any obscure works of literature that our readers deserve to know?
Sinister: No nothing special… we like to make lyrics like this because they fit perfect to our music dark and brutal!!!
HMA: Your top 10 death metal albums covers that should have been made it for Sinister?
Sinister: Man how can I answer this? There are so many killer album covers… Love the covers from Necrophobic/Darkside… Dismember, Like an ever flowing stream… Death, Scream bloody gore and Leprosy… Iron maiden, Powerslave… Immolation, Unholy cult.. Vital Remains, Dawn of the Apocalypse… Incantation, The infernal storm… Winds of plaque, The great stone war… Suffocation/Blood oath.. Autopsy/Macabre eternal.
HMA: Thanks for your time and interest in Heavy Music Artwork. Final words?
