The Dark Romantics By Maciej Śmigrodzki
Please note that nihilism, satanism, anti-humanism and other -isms are not autonomous values. They are contradictions of commonly accepted norms in Western societies. The common view on what’s good and evil, rationalism, Christianism, humanism, you name it. This negation and its simplicity is very romantic, and romanticism lies at the very core of black metal. The more serious it gets, the more it is so. And this is where its beauty is. This is where the art comes in.
Profanity and desecration are both a form of postmodernism which is already postmodern obviously. If you use a crucifix as an artefact that derives certain cultural context and use it to play with this context, it’s certainly postmodern. But If you turn it upside down only to show your anti-christianism, it’s just negation. Romantic, dualistic, therefore postmodern at all. Whos to tell one from the other? Are there any arbitral rules for that? Not at all. Because it is postmodern.
What is the ultimate form of blasphemy that would far reach all corners of the planet? This is probably the most romantic question ever. Ultimate blasphemy to reach all corners of the Earth – such a beautiful idea. And completely pointless, of course. If a certain society needs such, it means it’s people doesn’t give a fuck anymore, and the law must be applied to defend these dead values for them.
