Heavy Metal Advert Artworks is a visual archive of the advertisements that announced heavy metal album releases during the 1980s. Drawn primarily from British and European fanzines and music magazines—with selected material from the United States—this volume documents the graphic language used to promote the era’s records. Typography, illustration, photography, logos and page composition combined to give each release its own identity, often within the limited space of a single magazine page.
Were these adverts merely promotional material, or did they form an art of their own within heavy metal culture? This book leaves that question open, bringing the work together so that readers can examine, compare and appreciate it for themselves.
Presented entirely in black and white, this is an image-led archival collection rather than a conventional narrative history.
